Harvey Mackay said, and wrote an entire book about it too...
"Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty."
I think it's a little more cryptic than that even.
I think it's more like...
"Dig your OWN well, or dig your OWN grave."
How's that for a happy Friday's message.
But, if nothing else has been proven true in 2020, what HAS been proven true is this...
If you are relying on somebody else to provide for you, you are putting your life in their hands.
And maybe not even theirs.
Because, where I am regulations are making it super difficult for food service businesses to keep the doors open...
Even if you have an employer who cares about you in those industries and wants to keep you employed, they can't because they've been crippled by restrictions and rules that only seem to apply to them.
That's as far as I will let my opinion go on that part of this 2020 madness, but I think my stance is clear.
But, my point is this...
It doesn't matter if you have an employer who doesn't care about you, like the one who let me go 15 years ago...
Three weeks before Christmas, with a wife and 2 babies to support.
Or it's a set of nonsensical regulations that you can't control...
If you are letting somebody else provide for you...
You are digging your own grave financially.
Possibly in a more literal sense too as many people who aren't doing what they love suffer from stresses that lead to disease and death.
Are you saying;
"Man Nick... again with the happy messages today!"
Sorry, my friends... but the truth isn't always roses and rainbows.
And the truth about failing to give yourself the skills to provide for yourself long term is grim.
Those who rely on employers here in the states, if they make it to retirement age at all...
Have an over 85% chance of being broke and/or depending on government assistance just to survive out the rest of their lives.
Notice I said "survive," not live out the golden retirement years that the system tries to promote and promise. that just doesn't exist.
And knowing that, here's a spin on you possibly being "afraid" to try your own thing that you may not have thought about.
If you have an over 85% chance of being broke, miserable, and dependent on government assistance for the rest of your life...
Why not "take a chance" and give yourself the skill to do what you love????
Worst case scenario is that you end up where you were going anyway in that employer/government dependent situation.
At least you'll have some fun along the way focusing on things that you love to do!
Anyway... that quote by Harvey Mackay got me thinking today about what it really means to dig your OWN well.
Not just any well... but your OWN well.
If you want to start digging your OWN well today, before it l collapses, or before you live a lifetime that is not the one you deserve or desire...
All of the steps to give you those skills are here.
